OMWD Recognizes Local Students for “Be WaterSmart” Artwork

Winners of the annual “Be WaterSmart” youth poster competition were recognized by Olivenhain Municipal Water District’s Board of Directors at its May 25 meeting.

Over 50 fourth graders in OMWD’s service area participated in this year’s competition. Two winners are from Ms. Love’s class at Stone Ranch Elementary School, and one winner is from Ms. Roberts’ class at El Camino Creek Elementary School.

The first place winner was Ellie Lee. Her poster illustrates water-using devices and specific tips on how to reduce water.

Second place went to Angel Lu. Her poster is a vibrant word collage comprised of water-saving tips.

Ethan Huntington received third-place honors. His artwork depicts an anthropomorphic planet asking for your help.

“Engaging today’s youth is an effective way to raise community awareness regarding the importance of using water more wisely,” said OMWD President Ed Sprague. “This contest not only gets each student thinking about how to be water smart, but will also help to inspire others to make water conservation a way of life.”

This was the 24th iteration of the annual poster contest that asks fourth grade students to draw images to demonstrate the importance of water use efficiency in San Diego. The theme for this year’s contest was “Be WaterSmart.” The contest teaches students the value of water as a limited resource and the importance of using it efficiently, while providing OMWD with locally produced artwork to reinforce this message to its customers.

The three posters will be featured in a 2017 Water Awareness Calendar and displayed on OMWD vehicles.
