OMWD Converts La Cresta at Colinas de Oro Community to Recycled Water for Irrigation

Today, Olivenhain Municipal Water District began supplying recycled water to the HOA community of La Cresta at Colinas de Oro in Carlsbad. Using recycled water for the HOA’s irrigation needs will save over 2.25 million gallons of drinking water each year.

“Converting irrigation to recycled water exemplifies responsible stewardship,” said OMWD Board Director Lanfried. “It’s about making sensible choices whenever possible. This drought-resilient alternative for irrigation saves drinking water for future needs.”

Recent unpredictable weather patterns underscore the importance of preparing for future dry periods. OMWD is working to diversify its water sources to reduce reliance on imported water. Expansion of its recycled water network enhances drought resilience.

“Recycled water irrigation for our HOA common areas and slopes is a smart way to maintain our property, and substantially lower our water bills, while being mindful of regional water resources,” said HOA Vice President Randy Loftis. “It allows us to irrigate efficiently without using treated drinking water, and supports long-term sustainability and responsible property management.”

OMWD collaborates with other agencies across boundaries to broaden its recycled water distribution system. OMWD produces up to 2 million gallons of recycled water daily at its 4S Ranch Water Reclamation Facility. Additionally, OMWD purchases recycled water from neighboring agencies to supplement this supply.

In total, OMWD meets up to 15 percent of its overall demand with recycled water.
